After being in practice for 15years, you learn a thing or two. However, one thing that I have found most interesting is the development of new conditions over the last few years. 10-15years ago, "Text Neck" was not a "thing", but today it is becoming an epidemic. Think about it, do you have a home phone or a home computer? The most common answer is, "no", as we use our Smart phones for just about everything these days. Of course it is used as a form of telecommunication, but we also use it to text, to check the weather, to read the news, to check our email.....you name it, our phones seem to do everything now. While this can be useful and help save time, it is becoming a major problem!
We have primary "curves" in our spine that are in place for a reason. Similar to the lower back, our neck is supposed to have a "Lordotic" curve. These curves are essential to our health and longevity of our spine. These curves are so important that even the car manufacturers recognize this and provide "lumbar support" in the front seats to help support these natural curves(in the lower back). Unfortunately, things such as whiplash injuries, the way we sleep and daily activities can cause us to lose this curve. But as I mentioned earlier, our CELL PHONES are creating a major problem. The act of constantly looking down at our phones is causing us to lose this normal curve.
So how do you know if you have "text neck"? Some of the more common symptoms are neck pain and headaches, but the symptoms that are starting to become more prominent with this condition are upper back pain, pain in your shoulder blade and NUMBNESS in your hands. And the other sign we see over time is the development of a "hump" in your lower neck and upper back, which nobody wants!
Fortunately for our patients, Dr. Oberti is very experienced with this condition and knows exactly how to detect and correct this problem.
