Sciatica Treatment
Sciatica is a debilitating condition that affects the sciatic nerve, which is one of the longest nerves in the human body. It starts in the lower back, branches in the buttocks and travels down the back of each leg into the feet. Sciatica occurs when there is a compression of the sciatic nerve. Sufferers often experience lower back and leg pain, difficulty walking, numbness, tingling, burning, or weakness in the legs. Thankfully, sciatic nerve pain can be reduced with Nampa chiropractic care.
Diagnosing Sciatica with our Nampa Chiropractor
Before our Nampa chiropractor, Dr. Anthony J. Oberti, can treat your sciatica, he must first determine the injury or ailment that is causing your sciatic nerve pain. Sciatica can be caused by bone spurs, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, tight muscles in the buttocks and degenerative disc diseases.
Accurately diagnosing your lower back and leg pain involves an initial consultation, which is a discussion of your medical history and symptoms and a physical examination. In some instances, we may also need to take x-rays of your spine in order to get a clearer picture of your injuries and their severity. Once we have all the information, Dr. Anthony J. Oberti will explain the finding and recommend a treatment program to reduce your symptoms, heal your injury and provide you with ongoing wellness care.
Spinal Decompression Treatment
Spinal Decompression is one of the most effective, and safest treatments available for sciatica when the problem is from a bulging, herniated, degenerative or "slipped" disc. With the use of Spinal Decompression, a negative pressure is created in the disc, helping retract the injured part of the disc, taking pressure of the nerve. The treatment is a gentle, 25-30 minute process, where the patient is strapped to the table with specialized harnesses and the table gently separates, allowing the back to be stretched out and take the pressure of the disc. Full results are seen over the course of 6-8 weeks of weekly treatment.
Disc Injuries and Sciatic Nerve Pain
One of Dr, Anthony J. Oberti’s specialties is disc injuries, and one of the most common causes of sciatic nerve pain is herniated discs. If your sciatic nerve pain is caused by one or more herniated discs, our chiropractor may recommend spinal decompression, which is effective at helping the discs between the vertebrae retract, refill with fluid and heal. Along with spinal decompression, he may recommend strengthening your core with corrective exercises or a custom exercise program and massage therapy, which helps reduce muscle pain.
Unfortunately, Dr. Oberti has had a bulging disc in his neck for years in his neck, causing numbness, pain and weakness in his arm and understands the pathology and complications that come with this condition. With the help of Spinal Decompression, Dr. Oberti has been able to successfully treat this condition and keeps his symptoms to a minimum when his MRI revealed he may require surgery. With the fear of needing spinal surgery, and after failed attempts of steroid injections, Chiropractic adjustments, and PT, Dr Oberti purchased a Spinal Decompression machine to treat his own injury. After 10 weeks of treatment, numbness and weakness in his right arm have disappeared, and Dr. Oberti was able to avoid surgery. Having gone through this process and knowing all the ins and outs of the anatomy and having every potential medical resource at his disposal, it is safe to say Dr. Oberti understands the condition and how to approach treatment.
Spinal Misalignments and Sciatic Nerve Pain
If you have spinal misalignments, spinal stenosis or spondylolisthesis, Dr, Anthony J. Oberti may recommend spinal adjustments, lifestyle advice, massage therapy and physiotherapy. The goal of these treatments is to realign your vertebrae, reduce inflammation around your vertebrae and nerve roots and lower your levels of muscle pain. Additionally, Dr. Oberti personally has an L5 Spondylolisthesis, so he is VERY familiar with the condition and knows the exact treatment that is needed in these cases. Not all sciatica cases are caused from a bulging disc, so it is vital that you are accurately diagnosed so you get the proper treatment rather than spending lots of money on unnecessary, and very expensive, treatments.
